Official boat badge of HMS Osprey
The boat badge of HMS 'Osprey' (the torpedo and anti-submarine school located at Portland, UK from 1 April 1924 to February 1941). An official design, the pattern was approved in June 1924. It represents on a blue field, a gold osprey holding a silver fish. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border, representing a naval auxiliary. The item is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'OSPREY' is inscribed on the reverse. The original HMS 'Osprey' was a modified Z class Admiralty whaler, built in 1915 and named 'Icewhale'. In 1924 she was renamed 'Osprey' and led the first Anti-Submarine Flotilla under the command of Captain S.D. Tillard. This was based at Portland. In 1928, the whole HMS 'Osprey' command was transferred to a shore base which inherited the name and badge of the whaler.
