Official boat badge of HMS Durban
The boat badge of HMS 'Durban' (1919). Official pattern approved in May 1919. The badge is a pentagonal shape with a gold rope twist border representing a cruiser. The design shows on a white field, a mealie cob, gold with green leaves. The ear of corn forms part of the arms of Durban, South Africa. The badge is cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'DURBAN' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Durban' was a Danae-class cruiser, launched in 1919 and commissioned in 1921. She had an active career during the Second World War, narrowly escaping from Singapore during the Japanese attack, and being damaged by bombing. She escorted convoys to South Africa and was eventually scuttled on 9 June 1944 as a breakwater for the Mulberry Harbours.
