Wine glass

Wine glass with an ogee bowl, facet-cut stem, and shaped foot. There is a gilded scene on each side depicting a palm tree, standing figure, trophy of guns, standard, pikes and an oval shield of arms bearing three scallop shells. The glass has a plain gilt rim and gilding on the foot in the form of fortifications.

This wine glass, inscribed ‘The Twelth [sic] of August is a Very Good Toast’, commemorates that capture of Havana, Cuba, on that day in 1762. It was an important victory for Britain and a serious blow to Spain. The gilded decoration on each side depicts and palm tree and distant fortress, a standing figure and military trophies.
