Official boat badge of HMS Sussex
The boat badge of HMS 'Sussex' 1928. An official pattern approved circa 1927. On a field blue, a martlet, gold. The design is derived from the arms of West Sussex County Council granted in 1899. The martlet is a stylised heraldic version of the swift with tufts of feathers instead of legs. Pentagonal shape with a gold rope twist border. The badge is a pentagonal shape with a gold rope twist border, representing a cruiser. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. HMS 'Sussex' was a County-class heavy cruiser. In 1939, she was with force H in the South Atlantic looking for 'Graf Spee', she then served with the Home Fleet during the Norwegian campaign. She suffered bomb damage while being refitted at Glasgow. She returned to service in August 1942 in the Atlantic, then in the Indian Ocean. The surrender of the Japanese garrison at Singapore was signed in board in 1944. She was scrapped in 1950.
