Official boat badge of HMS Birmingham
The boat badge of HMS 'Birmingham' 1936. The official design approved in July 1921. It depicts on a white field a human arm proper, holding a hammer, issuant from a mural crown gold. The badge is a pentagonal shape with a gold rope twist border representing a cruiser. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'BIRMINGHAM' is inscribed on the reverse. There were two cruisers named HMS 'Birmingham' that would have born this badge. The first was launched in 1913 and was present at the Dogger Bank action and the Battle of Jutland. She rammed and sunk U-15. This vessel was broken up in 1931. The second 'Birmingham' was launched in 1936. During the Second World War she took part in Malta convoys and in 1943 was damaged by U-407. She subsequently took part in the Korean War and featured in the films 'The Baby and the Battleship' and 'The battle of the River Plate' before being scrapped in 1960.
