Window pane

Two panes of glass with engraved inscriptions in several different hands, mounted for display in a wooden fitting- a sloping case. Left hand pane with inscriptions dated 1767, 1755 and 1757. The right hand panel has a verse in support of Admiral John Byng.

Left hand pane inscribed: 'L'Amitie Bell Lt Lynn Sept 12th 1767. [Two semi legible inscription in Latin dated Sept 19 1755 and Jan 30 1757] 'Dear Dr Thomas'. A caricature subtitled: 'Lord Chalkstone alias Addis.'

Right hand pane: 'Come all you true Britons and listen to me, / I'll tell you the truth, you'll then plainly see, / How Minorca was lost, why the kingdom doth ring, / And lay the whole blaim on Admiral Byng. / Sing tantara, rogues all, rogues all.'

'Newcastle and Hardwick and Anson did now / Preside at the helm and to whom all must bow / Minorca besieged, who protection did bring? / They know 'tis too late, left the Victory to Byng. / Sing etc.'

''With fiorce insufficient he's ordered away / he obeys and he sails without any delay / But alas, 'tis too late, who shall say to the king / Minorca must fall, why accuse Mr Byng. / Sing etc.'

'Minorca now falls, and the nation enraged / with justice they call, let all who engaged / in this ... deed, with curst infamy swing, / what none to be found but poor Adm. Byng / Sing etc.'
