Terrestrial and celestial pocket globe

Terrestrial and celestial pocket globe. Geographical details on the terrestrial sphere include monsoons marked in the Indian Ocean and the Chinese Sea. The Chinese Wall is drawn. Australia is drawn according to Cook's discoveries in that Tasmania is still connected to Australia. Australia is labelled 'Dimens Land'. There is a note regarding Captain Cook's death: 'Owhyhee / Here C. Cook / was Kill'd on Cook's death'. The tracks of Anson and Cook are marked. A total of six oceans are named.

The present pocket globe is an updated version of the Lane 1/2 copy, which has the prime meridian through the Canary Islands. The choice of the prime meridian of London on the present globe is a later adjustment. Updated versions of the present copy are numerous, for instance, see West GLB0010.

Astronomical details on the inside of the case are the same as those of Cushee GLB0044. The projection is geocentric but the constellations are seen from the back. The stars are represented by different symbols but there is no magnitude table. The Milky Way is labelled. The 48 Ptolemaic constellations and four of the non-Ptolemaic constellations are drawn. Four of the southern constellations are also drawn, as well as those of Plancius and all those of Hevelius.
