Official boat badge of HMS Winchelsea
The boat badge of HMS 'Winchelsea' 1917. The official design submitted in November 1919. On a field blue, a medieval ship, gold. This design is based on the seal of the town. The badge is shield-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing an destroyer. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'WINCHELSEA' is inscribed on the reverse. She was an Admiralty V/W class destroyer, built by Samual White, Cowes in 1917. In the early part of the war, she was deployed as a convoy escort in the Western Approaches. In 1940 she took part in the Dunkirk evacuation. During 1943 she was reconstructed as a long range escort and afterwards continued to escort Atlantic convoys. From 1944 she was deployed in patrol and convoy defence in the North Sea. 'Winchelsea' was sold for breaking up in March 1945.
