Terrestrial and celestial pocket globe
Terrestrial and celestial pocket globe. Geographical details on the terrestrial sphere show the location of the 'Antipodes to London'. The monsoons in the Indian Sea are recorded, the 'Chinese Wall' is depicted and California is drawn as a peninsula. Australia and New Zealand are drawn according to the Dutch discoveries. The track of Anson is recorded and labelled. A total of five oceans are named.
Astronomical details on the inside of the case show stars represented by different symbols, but a magnitude table is absent. The Milky Way is labelled. Six stars and three star groups are named. The 48 Ptolemaic constellations and four of the non-Ptolemaic constellations are drawn. Four of the southern constellations are drawn with those of Plancius and Hevelius.
The present copy is interesting because the name of the engraver is missing. All later editions have the name 'J. Mynde' below the cartouche. This would suggest that the present copy is a first proof and was perhaps owned by Ferguson himself. Although probably a proof, certain cartographic and inconsistencies in design have remained uncorrected. Other pocket globes in the National Maritime Museum, London collection, which derive from the same but updated, copper plates described here are Adams GLB0040, GLB0051, GLB0042, and GLB0200, and Lane GLB0012. Pattrick GLB0208 is a close copy, repeating one erroneous star name. For full details about the cartography and construction of this globe please refer to the related publication.
