Terrestrial table globe
Terrestrial table globe. It forms a pair with the celestial globe, Hondius and Veen GLB0122. Geographical details on the sphere include loxodromes for 32 compass points. There is a hypothetical southern continent, which is labelled 'TERRA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA'. The Strait of le Maire is shown. At the most southern point of South America there are labels for 'Fretum Magellanica', 'Passage du I. Lameyr' and 'I. Maurice'. There is advice to the reader at the southern continent in a rectangular cartouche.
There are extensive notes on discoveries which are listed according to eight different regions, for example, around the North Pole, in North America within a cartouche, and at the west coast of North America. There is a text starting with, 'Fretum hoc primus...' but the remainder is illegible due to damage. Decorative features include many ships, a few monsters and 22 fish, depicted with their names. A total of ten oceans are named. For full details about the cartography and construction of this globe please refer to the related publication.
