Terrestrial table globe

Terrestrial table globe. It forms a pair with the celestial globe, Bardin and Wright, GLB0168. Geographical details on the sphere show 'Variable Winds' with wind arrows between the tropics, and two tables for the monsoons, one in 'THE INDIAN SEA' and the other in 'THE EASTERN OCEAN'. Australia is labelled New Holland and Tasmania is depicted as a peninsula.

Notes on discoveries read 'G. F. de Witt's Land disc.d 1616' and 'Land of Lyons discd 1622' and 'NEW SOUTH WALES disd 1770'. The tracks 'Ad Anson's Track', 'Cap.t Cook in 1769, 1773, 1774, 1776, 1778, 1779' and 'Cook and Furneaux in 1773' are shown. There is a note on Cook's death: 'Owyhee Here Capt. Cook was killed, Feby 14, 1779'. A total of nine oceans are named.

The globe was selected by Harrison & Co., printers and booksellers, as a promotional gift to go with W. F. Martyn, 'The Geographical Magazine, or a new copious, compleat and universal system of geography', which was published in parts from 1 January 1782. See also Bardin, GLB0093.
