Celestial globe gores

Celestial globe gores. Astronomical details on the gores are the same as Oterschaden GLB0120, but numbers one, two, and three are added to indicate the brightness of stars. The name of Cassiopeia is changed into Cassiopea and a number of constellation names have been added. In addition, the constellation of Andromeda is now chained. There is a magnitude table in front of Ursa Major. The Milky Way is drawn but not labelled. Two stars and one star group are named on the globe. The 48 Ptolemaic constellations and one non-Ptolemaic constellation are drawn.

The style of the celestial map includes Bootes depicted with hunting dogs, an unidentified youth located at the end of Eridanus and Antinous is drawn in the so-called Demongenet style. It is probable that these gores are earlier than 1600 by some ten to 15 years. The present set of gores could be a new edition printed from newly engraved copper plates of the Oterschaden globes. Since the cartography of the gores stems from a tradition that starts with Demongenet in about 1560, these gores were certainly old-fashioned if compared with contemporary globes made elsewhere. For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
