Lunar table globe
Lunar table globe. Astronomical details on the sphere show the landing position of the Soviet space probe of 1959 and the 'Moonshot'. The most important craters are labelled in Russian; some names in red are barely legible. The area photographed by the Automatic Interplanetary Station is indicated with a text. A meridian is marked as the line of evening terminator during photography.
The globe was compiled from photographs obtained by the Automatic Interplanetary Station on 7 October 1959 and from data in the 'Atlas of the far side of the Moon'. The visible part of the moon is reproduced from contemporary maps. On publication, the globe was already outdated as better data from space photographs of the far side of the Moon had become available. For full details about the cartography and construction of this globe please refer to the related publication.
