Celestial table globe
Celestial table globe. It forms a pair with the anonymous terrestrial globe, GLB0248. Astronomical details on the sphere include a labelled magnitude table in front of Ursa major. A total of two stars and two star groups are named. The 48 Ptolemaic constellations are drawn with many incorrect spellings for their names. Only one of the non-Ptolemaic constellations is drawn and labelled. Bootes is depicted with hunting dogs; there is a male figure at the end of Eridanus, close to Acarnar; Coma Berenices is missing; and Antinous is in the Demongenet sytle.
These globes are engraved with a coat of arms, possibly for the Lord of Monaco or his grandson. The cartographic images on both globes were copied from gores by Nicholas Spirinx in 1610. This would imply a date of manufacture during the first half of the 17th century. The construction of the globe is the same as GLB0248. For full details about the cartography and construction of this globe please refer to the related publication.
