Admiral Lord Viscount Exmouth, Engraved for Capt Brenton's Naval History

A full-length portrait of Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1812–25, wearing the ribbon of the Order of the Bath over the ribbon of the Sicilian Order of Saint Ferdinand with the stars of both orders on his left breast and the cross of the Sardinian Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus and the collar of the Order of the Annuniciation of the Royal House of Savoy around his neck, looking upwards and to the right. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Lord Viscount Exmouth / Engraved for Capt. Brenton’s Naval History,’ and with the publication line, ‘Published August 1 1836 by Henry Colburn, 13 Great Marlborough Street.’ This portrait is after an oil painting by William Beechey. Beechey’s painting was produced for the Ironmonger’s Company (who still hold the work) and exhibited in 1817 at the Royal Academy. It was first engraved by Charles Turner around 1818 (see PAH5521). This later print was published by Henry Colburn in 1836 as an illustration for Edward Pelham Brenton’s ‘The Naval History of Great Britain, from the Year MDCCLXXXIII to MDCCCXXXVI’ (London: Henry Colburn, 1837), volume 2, page 560. (Updated May 2019.)
Technique includes stipple engraving.
