Admiral Boscawen Smoletts Continuation to Home
An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711–1761) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered above the image ‘Smollett’s Continuation to Hume’, and below ‘Admiral Boscawen / Engraved by W. Ridley, from an Original Drawing. To face V.VI. p.162. / Printed for C. Cooke, 17, Paternoster Row.’ This print was engraved by William Ridley. The portrait is derived from Joshua Reynolds’s full-length oil painting of 1755–57, now in the collection of Lord Falmouth. A nineteenth-century copy of Reynolds’s painting is in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2565). This print was published by Charles Cooke as an illustration in his edition of Tobias Smollett’s ‘The History of England from the Revolution to the Death of George the Second’ (London: C. Cooke, ca. 1794). First published in 1757–65, Smollett’s ‘History’ was designed as a continuation of David Hume’s ‘History of England, from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688’ (1754–61). (Updated June 2019).
