An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) wearing a wig and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. The portrait is surrounded by sprigs of laurel and hangs above a cartouche, in which is represented a naval engagement. Lettered above the image, ‘Engraved for Hervey’s Naval History. Vol. V. Book 8. Ch. 12.’ Also lettered beneath the image with the engraver’s details, ‘J. Collyer sc.’, and the title, ‘Lord Hawke, Knight of the Bath and Admiral of the Fleet.’ This print was engraved by Joseph Collyer and published as an illustration in Frederic Hervey’s ‘The naval history of Great Britain; from the earliest Times to the Rising of the Parliament in 1779’ (London, 1779), volume 4, book 6, chapter 3, page 250. The print is based on an earlier engraving published in ‘The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure’, volume 27, August 1760, page 82 (see PAD2906), with changes to the naval engagement in the cartouche. The portrait is based on an oil painting by George Knapton, which was first engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell around 1747 (see PAF3453). (Updated April 2019.)
