Sr Edward Hawke Rear Admiral of the White Engraved for the Naval Chronicle
A half-length portrait, slightly to left, of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) in a plain coat with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath (depicted in reverse), holding a telescope in his left hand. Lettered above the image, ‘Engrav’d for the Naval Chronicle’, and below, ‘Sr Edward Hawke, Rear Admiral of the White / Sold by J. Fuller.’ This print was published in ‘The Naval Chronicle: or, Voyages, Travels, Expeditions, Remarkable Exploits and Atchievements, Of the most Celebrated English Navigators, Travellers, and Sea-Commanders, From the Earliest Accounts to the End of the Year 1759’ (London: J. Fuller, 1760), volume 3, opposite page 167, alongside an article on ‘Admiral Hawke’s Engraving with a French Fleet off Cape Finisterre’ (pp. 167–71). The portrait is derived, in reverse, from a mezzotint published by Robert Sayer in 1755 (see PAD4708). (Updated May 2019.)
