Horizontal pedestal dial
Horizontal pedestal dial for latitiude 51° 30' North. This dial is made up of a circular dial-plate with hour and minute circles, a table of the equation of time and a windrose. These dials can still be found (though now mainly as ornaments) in gardens and churchyards. They are set up so that the noon line lies along the meridian with the hours arranged symmetrically on either side.
Tables giving the equation of time were common on 18th century dials, and were used to set clocks. The dial is signed 'Made by THO WRIGHT Instrument Maker to His MAJESTY GEO. II D'. There is a similar example of Wright's work at the British Museum (inventory no. CAI/2461).
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
