Portable refractor telescope
Portable brass refractor telescope, with two eyepieces, one a later replacement, folding tripod. The telescope can be dismantled and fitted into its mahogany travelling box. Jesse Ramsden was one of the leading makers of astronomical instruments of his time, and supplied observatories in many parts of Europe. This telescope is an example of the smaller instruments he produced for teachers of astronomy and individual observers.
Telescope: The barrel of the telescope is made of brass. It has an extendable rod for fine adjustment of the telescope's position.
Stand: The telescope is mounted on a pillar stand with three folding claw legs.
