Jug

Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in brown with a ship rigged vessel in full sail, a cutter in the foreground and a paddle steamer behind. On the shore, a boy in a sailor collar and a straw hat is sitting on a bale marked with a 'B' within a diamond, a cross and '66'. A lighthouse is shown behind him. A rope twist pattern is printed down the handle and rope loops and anchors around the rim. The maker's mark is printed on the base within a looped rope border with the pattern name 'BERTIE'S HOPE'. The jug may relate to other commemoratives showing Albert Edward (Bertie), later Edward VII (1841-1910), as a child.
Allman, Broughton & Co. were based in Burslem, Stafforshire, in the 1860s.
