Sextant Pattern 702

The sextant has a black crackle-lacquered brass or bronze three-circle pattern frame and a black plastic handle containing a battery. The white plastic micrometer drum and quick-release thumb clamp are located at the bottom of the index arm, disengaging from a rack. The scale is lit by a battery lamp, with the battery stored in the handle. The instrument has four green shades and three green horizon shades. Index-glass adjustment is made by a screw and on the horizon-glass by capstan screws.

Accompanying the sextant is a detached threaded telescope bracket with perpendicular adjustment made by a rising-piece and a milled knob. The telescope is 73 mm in length with an erect image. A second telescope is 188 mm long with an inverted image and four cross wires. Also accompanying the instrument is sight-tube which is 82 mm long, a brush, and a green shaded eyepiece. The second telescope and an adjusting key are missing.

The instrument has a bronzed limb with inlaid silver scale from -5° to 130° by 1°, measuring to 123°. Micrometer to 10 arcminutes.

The sextant is contained in a square fitted mahogany box, which is probably not original to this sextant. It is lined with green textile and contains in the lid an Admiralty Compass Observatory certificate of serviceability for marine sextant no. 28485, which is a different instrument, dated 13 May 1968.
