Celestial globe gores

Celestial globe gores. Astronomical details on the gores are the same as George Philip & Son GLB0243. There is a magnitude table entitled 'MAGNITUDES' in a cartouche above Bootes. The stars are marked according to a system which is explained below the cartouche with the text, 'N. B. Greek Letters or Figures prefixed to Stars refer to the British / Catalogue'. A total of 62 stars and 15 star groups are named. The 48 Ptolemaic constellations and four of the non-Ptolemaic constellations are drawn. Seven of the southern constellations are drawn as well as those of Plancius, Hevelius and Lacaille. The overall measurements are for each of the four sheets with two sets of 12 half gores. Cartouche text reads: ‘Smith’s Celestial Globe, containing all the principal stars compiled from the works of Wollaston, Flamsteed, De La Caille, Havelius, Mayer, Bradley, Herschel, Maskelyne, the Transactions of the Astronomical Society of London &c &c. G Philip & Son Ltd. 32 Fleet St., London EC.’ For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
