Sir Charles Saunders K.B. Admiral of the Blue Squadron Firsst Cord Commiss of the Admiralty &c &c
An oval bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–87, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, raising his left arm. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘Sir Charles Saunders K.B. Admiral of the Blue Squadron, First Lord Commiss. of the Admiralty &c. &c.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘Ridley sculp. / Pub. by J. Gold 103 Shoe Lane, Aug. 2 1802.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley after Richard Brompton’s three-quarter-length portrait of 1772–3 (see BHC3011). It was published by Joyce Gold on 2 August 1802 as an illustration in the ‘Naval Chronicle’, volume 8, opposite page 1, where it appeared alongside ‘Biographical Memoirs of Sir Charles Saunders K.B. Admiral of the Blue Squadron, and Some Time First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty’ (pp. 1–16). (Updated May 2019.)
