St Vincent
A half-length portrait to left of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812, with the star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with a facsimile of the sitter’s signature. This print was engraved in 1840 for E. H. Maxwell (ed.), ‘The Naval and Military Almanac’ (London: A. H. Baily & Co., 1840), July, opposite page 30, alongside a biography of the sitter. The portrait was engraved by W. Jackman after John Keenan’s oil painting of 1801, which now known through William Barnard’s mezzotint engraving (see PAG9341). The list of illustrations in the ‘Naval and Military Almanac’, in which this print was published, mistakenly described the print as after a portrait by William Beechey. The same plate was also used to illustrate Joseph Allen’s ‘Battles of the British Navy from A.D. 1000 to 1840’ (London: A. H. Baily & Co., 1842), volume 1, opposite page 416. (Updated June 2019.)
