Rt Hon Lord Hood European Magazine
A circular bust-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1724–1816) in naval uniform (probably intended to represent flag officer’s full dress uniform, 1767–87) with his hat under his right arm. The portrait is place on a fictive pedestal within a rectangular frame, decorated at the top with ribbons and a mask with hair of laurel. Lettered in the lower part of the frame with the title, ‘Rt. Hon. Lord Hood.’ Also lettered above the image, ‘European Magazine’, and beneath with the production details and publication line, ‘W. Angus Sculp. / From a Painting by West in the Possession of Sr. Ino. Dick. / Published July 1, 1782, by I. Fielding, Pater-noster Row, I. Sewell, Cornhill, I. Debrett, Piccadilly.’ This portrait was engraved by William Angus after Benjamin West’s oil painting of around 1767, now in the collection of the Hood family. According to the inscription on this print, the portrait was owned at the time of engraving by Sir John Dick, the British consul at Leghorn (Livorno) from 1754 until 1776. The print was published by John Fielding, John Sewell and John Debrett as an illustration in the ‘European Magazine, and London Review’, volume 1, June 1782, opposite page 399, alongside ‘Authentic Anecdotes of Admiral Lord Hood (With a beautiful Engraving of his Head, from an original Painting by West, in the Possession of Sir John Dick.)’.
