Mr Dry as Lambro the pirate
Folder has accompanying text. This appears to be late-19th or early 20th-century reproduction of an earlier 19th-century print showing Dry (an actor not yet more firmly identified even by the V&A, which has original images of him in this role) playing Lambro the pirate in a stage version of Byron's 'Don Juan'. In Canto II of the poem, Juan is shipwrecked on one of the islands of the Cyclades (in the Aegean) where he is found and cared for by Lambro's daughter Haidée and and her maid, Zoe. He and Haidée rapidly fall in love, to the displeasure of Lambro, who sells Juan into slavery in Constantinople. [PvdM 11/23]
