Mr Cobham as Will Watch
Hand-coloured. Plate No.105. Mounted on sheet with PAI9704. 'Will Watch, the bold Smuggler' is the title of an early 19th-century song, which tells how he promises his lover 'black-eyed Sue' that after his next successful foray he will give up the trade and come ashore. He is pursued by the Revenue men, however, shot and buried on the beach according to his wishes by his crew at dead of night. 'Will Watch' was the subject of at least two melodramas performed respectively at Astley's Amphitheatre and the Coburg Theatre, London, in 1819-20, to which the song may well relate, and this is a 'penny plain. tuppence coloured' print of the actor Thomas Cobham (1786 -1842) in the role, possibly at the Surrey or Coburg Theatres in London with which he was particularly associated playing melodramatic tragic parts. The original has not been sighted for this note but a web image of a similar but uncoloured print, which does not visibly name the actor, gives Park the publisher's address as 47 Leonards Street, Tabernacle Walk, London.
