Presentation Sword
Presentation sword owned by Captain William Rogers 1783-1825. The gilt brass stirrup hilt has a chequered ivory grip and lion's-head pommel. The large circular guard is joined to the knuckle-guard by a loop, which is cast and chased in high relief with a lion overcoming a hydra-like monster, the guard and loop also have cabled edges. Inscribed on the curved, gilt blade is 'Osborn & Gunby Sword Cutlers to his Majesty present this sword to Capt W Rogers in testimony of their approbation of the very galant conduct evinced by him on board HM Packet WINDSOR CASTLE on 1st Oct 1807'.
William Rogers was born in Falmouth in 1783 and joined the postal Packet Service as a boy. While in temporary command of the 'Windsor Castle' in 1807 he achieved national fame by capturing the French privateer 'Jeune Richard', which attacked him off Barbados, despite it being more powerfully armed and with a much larger crew.
