House flag, Townsend Thoresen Car Ferries Ltd
The house flag of Townsend Thoresen Car Ferries Ltd, Oslo. A rectangular orange flag with the white letters 'TT'. The flag is made of syntheitic fibre bunting with a cotton hoist. It is double sided with the letters in polyester cotton. A rope and toggle is attached.
Townsend Thoresen was the name under which European Ferries Group PLC (the holding company) marketed the ferry services of Townsend Car Ferries Ltd, Thoresen Car Ferries Ltd and Atlantic Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
Townsend operated ships from Dover to Calais and Zeebruge and was owned by George Nott Industries Ltd of Coventry. In July 1968 they made an offer for the shares of Thoresen which was accepted. In 1969 the two companies produced a joint brochure under the name of The European Ferries Group but to outward appearances the ships did not change. In 1976 Townsend changed the colour of its ships from pea green to that of Thoresen’s orange - Thoresen had originally been set up in1963 by a Norwegian, Otto Thoresen to improve the Cross Channel service for passengers. In 1987, following the wrecking of the ship ‘Herald of Free Enterprise’, Townsend Thoresen was acquired by P&O. (Research; Lionel Moore).
