The Right Honble Earl of St Vincent knight of the Most Honble Order of the Bath Admiral of the White Squadron

An oval bust-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘The Right Honble. Earl of St. Vincent Knight of the Most Honble Order of the Bath Admiral of the White Squadron.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘L. F. Abbot Esq. Pinx. / Ridley sculp. / Pubd. by Bunney & Gold Shoe Lane 1 August, 1800.’ This print was engraved by William Ridley after Lemuel Francis Abbott’s oil painting, probably painted around November 1795, which is now in the National Portrait Gallery. Abbott’s painting was originally owned by the sitter’s wife, Frances Mary (née Disney). The print was published by Joyce Gold and John Bunney on 1 August 1800 as an illustration for ‘The Naval Chronicle’, volume 4 (July–December 1800), opposite page 1, alongside ‘Biographical Memoirs of the Right Honourable John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent, Kniht of the Most Honourable Order fo the Bath, and Admiral of the White Squadron’ (pp. 1–42).
