Two pirates from 'Dick Deadeye or Duty Done' (caricature)
Drawing. Two design studies of pirates (cut irregularly from a larger sheet) for the musical cartoon feature film directed by Bill Melendez, 'Dick Deadeye or Duty Done' (1975), based on Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Pirates of Penzance' and 'HMS Pinafore'. It came from a collection of these drawings by Searle, purchased and dispersed by Abbott and Holder, who probably divided the larger sheet into a number of individual studies for sale. The Museum purchased this one for inclusion in its 'Pirates: Fact and Fiction' exhibition in 1992 in which, much reduced, it was also used as a decorative vignette on the title page of the accompanying book.
