Commemorative medal depicting Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne (1573-1655). Obverse: Profile head of Sir Theodore Turquet de Mayerne. Legend: 'TH . DE . MAYERNE . EQ . AV . BARO . ALBNAE . 4 . REG . GAL. ET . ANGL . ARCHIAOS' (Theodore de Mayerne, Knight, Baron of Albona, Chief Physician to four kings of France and England). Reverse: The different Hermetic symbols - the winged cap of Hermes, hexagram, snake with tail in mouth and the philosopher's stone. Legend: 'NON . HAEC . SINE . NUMINE' (these are not without divine influence (Virgil Aen. ii. 777). Hermeticism was a branch of Freemasonry which studied the occult sciences and alchemy. The symbols are a reference to Mayerne's work in chemistry. The four kings alluded to were Henry IV and Louis XIII of France, James I and Charles I of England.
