Africa General Service Medal
Africa General Service medal with Somaliland 1908-10 bar, awarded to Alfred Edward Broughton, Chief Stoker RN. Obverse: Bust of King Edward VII in military uniform, cloak, order and medals. Legend: 'EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR'. Reverse: Britannia standing (right) in a helmet, a lion behind her, a trident in her right and a palm branch in her left hand pointing towards the rising sun. Exergue: 'AFRICA'. Bar: 'SOMALILAND 1908-10'. Inscription on edge: '170235 A.E.BROUGHTON, STO. P.O. H.M.S. HYACINTH'. Fitted with ribbon of Naval General Service Medal which should have been on MED11488.
Chief Stoker Alfred Edward Broughton (1873-1934) entered the Royal Navy aged 19 on 21 November 1892 and was discharged in February 1919. He saw active service in HMS 'Hyacinth' blockading the coast of Somaliland and on anti-pirate duty in the Persian Gulf 1909-1910 in HMS 'Hyacinth'.
