Naval General Service Medal 1936

Naval General Service Medal 1936 awarded to Alfred Broughton, Chief Stoker, RN. Obverse: Head of King George VI crowned. Legend: 'GEORGIVS VI D : G:BR : OMN : REX : F : D : INDIAE : IMP.' Reverse: Britannia in a helmet, a trident in her right and a shield in her left hand, standing in a sea-car drawn by two horses. Bar; 'PERSIAN GULF 1909-14'. Inscribed on edge: '170235. A.E.BROUGHTON. STO. P.O. H.M.S. HYACINTH'. Suspended from a clasp and wrong ribbon (Africa General Service Medal, yellow and black stripes). It should be white with rose-coloured edges divided by two narrow stripes of the same colour.

Chief Stoker Alfred Edward Broughton (1873-1934) entered the Royal Navy aged 19 on 21 November 1892 and was discharged in February 1919. He saw active service in HMS 'Hyacinth' blockading the coast of Somaliland and on anti-pirate duty in the Persian Gulf 1909-1910 in HMS 'Hyacinth'.
