A Bacchante (formerly identified as Lady Hamilton as Hebe)
Framed pastel drawing with a received title of 'Lady Hamilton as Hebe'. This identification is questionable. The original picture by Russell, now lost, was called 'A Bacchante' and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1787, no. 155: it was engraved in mezzotint under the same title by William Pether in 1791 (copy in the BM) and the model was probably not Emma Hart, later Lady Hamiltion, being more sharp featured. According to Neil Jeffares (personal communication December 2012), this appears to be a copy by an unidentified artist, probably from the print though there are some differences. He states that an impression of the mezzotint, coloured in by hand in pastel, was known to Russell’s descendant F. H. Webb around 1910 and another such copy appeared at Phillips, 12 July 1999, lot 4.
