Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to William Webster (1878-1960). Stoker RN. Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscribed on edge: ' '39828 W. WEBSTER STO. 1.R.N.' Fitted with a ring and watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues. In original box of issue with MED1505.
William Webster (1878-1960) was the son of a Gravesend fisherman. During World War I, he served as a stoker in the Royal Navy from Jan 1917 to April 1919 in HMS 'Pembroke', 'Euryalus' and 'Sapphire' - the last two vessels stationed in the Far East. Webster was demobilised on 1 April 1919. In 1906 he had married Annie Mary Jennings at Cheltenham where the couple settled, Webster returning to his former trade as stonemason.
