Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to A. J. Pollard, CPO Stoker. Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscribed on edge: 'K.12172 A.J. POLLARD. S.P.O. R.N.' Suspended from a watered silk ribbon of rainbow hues. Mounted on a bar with three others.
Arthur John Pollard (1893-1962) joined the Royal Navy in 1911 after being apprenticed to a boiler maker. He served as a stoker during World War I, for some of the time in torpedo boat HMS 'Express' and destroyer 'Albacore'. In 1930 he was promoted Chief Stoker before retiring in 1933. He re-joined the Navy in 1940 and retired again in August 1945. Pollard married Minnie Isabel Bolland in 1922 and was working as a boilerman and machine attendant during 1939 in Slough where he died in 1962.
