British War Medal 1914-18
Awarded to Ernest Benjamin Ellis, Stoker I (1897-1918). Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18': Engraved on the edge: 'K28237. E.B. ELLIS. STO.1. R.N.' Fitted with an orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes. Mounted on a bar with two others.
Ernest Benjamin Ellis (1897-1918) was the son of a railway worker. He entered the Royal Navy on 27 April 1915 and died in the loss of destroyer HMS 'Racoon', wrecked in a snowstorm on the North coast of Ireland, 9 January 1918. All hands were lost.
