Between each arm is a Puloulou (gold staff with a ball on top indicating royalty). Obverse: Central medallion light blue depicting feather covered staff. Medallion surrounded by white band inscribed: 'KALAKAUA FEBRUARY 12, 1874'. Reverse: Central medallion light blue inscribed '1874'. Surrounded by a white band inscribed 'KEOLA' in gold with wreath. Suspended by a gold crown from a blue moire ribbon.

Frederick Edwards, then in command of HMS 'Mutine' on the Pacific Station, was invited to the coronation of Kalakaua, the last king of Hawaii on 12 February 1883. As an official representative of Great Britain, he was presented with this Royal Hawaiian order.
