Diamond erasing paste from the RGO

Small round tin containing diamond erasing paste. The tin is labelled 'NORTON & GREGORY LTD LONDON/ DIAMOND/ ERASING PASTE/ N & G/ REMOVES INDIAN INK LINES/ from/ TRACING CLOTH/ WITHOUT INJURING THE SURFACE'. The tin still contains diamond paste.

The company of Norton & Gregory was established in 1898 and had offices in London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Bisley (Surrey) with a factory in Harlesden. They began by selling tracing office and photo printers before later diversifying into stationery and drawing instruments, selling both their own items and those made by other manufacturers. They held many patents for drawing instruments and were last listed in the London directory for 1959.

This diamond paste is listed on p.252 in part V of their 1938 catalogue and was available in a number of sizes: 1 oz size 1s 6d (15s doz), 8 oz size 7s 6d, 16 oz size 13s 6d. It was used for erasing ink lines on tracing cloth and glazed tracing paper. It says no trace is left and that it can be drawn over after.
