1914-15 Star

Awarded to Chief Petty Officer Alexander George Clarke DSM (1879-1967). On a bar as worn with four others. A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: "G". with a "V" within it. Inscribed on reverse: '187324 A.G. CLARKE, ACT. C.P.O., R.N.' Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon.

HMS ‘Canopus’. In 1902 he was promoted to Petty officer and in 1916 to Chief Petty Officer. He was present at the Battle of Jutland and commended for good service in action. The DSM was gazetted 27 June 1919. CPO Clarke was also Mentioned in Despatches and received the 1914-5 Star (MED1569), British War Medal (MED1570), Victory Medal with 2 oak leaves for Mention in Dispatches (MED1571) and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (MED1572). Clarke married Ellen Jane Griffin, 2 August 1904 at Melcombe Regis. In 1939 he was working at a carpenter at New Beacon School, Sevenoaks.
