Lifesaving award
Awarded to Clement Frederick Mander (1871-1949). Obverse: Seated female figure holding a shield bearing the arms of Canada in her right hand, a wreath in her left. She looks towards a building in the background. Legend: 'PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA'. Reverse: Within a wreath of maple leaves the inscription: 'PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO F.MANDER FOR GALLANT SERVICES IN RESCUING THE SHIPWRECKED CREW OF THE CANADIAN BARQUE "SWANSEA" 2ND July 1904'.
The 'Swansea', wooden barque, built 1877 at Hantsport, Nova Scotia, was abandoned in the Atlantic about 13 July 1904 when bound from Hantsport to Buenos Aires. The crew were taken off by the 'Star of Australia' 1899, Belfast.
