Tom Sumpton (1896-1959) was the son of Tom Sumpton senior, a Hull sloopman and ship rigger and his wife Maria. He was the brother of Robert William Sumpton. He served with the merchant service during World War 1. A newspaper account of his brother's wedding in 1922 describes him as 'of Houlder Bros' (Houlder Line). By 1939 he was describing himself as 'lecturer, writer, international organisation'. Cherry Gilchrist provides strong evidence that he wrote under the pen name of Anthony Greville Gascoigne - the head of an international occult society called 'The Brother's of the Path'. The group were active in North Yorkshire in the 1930's and 40's, moving to Ireland in 1946. Some of Sumpton's lyrics were set to music by a friend, the Nigerian musician Fela Sowande during the 1950's. Sumpton died in South Mimms and was buried at New Romney, Kent.
