Victory Medal 1914-18
Awarded to William John Boots (1888-1952). Obverse: Winged Victory standing (front), a palm branch in her right hand, her left arm outstretched. Reverse: Within a laurel garland, Inscription: 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919'. Inscribed on edge: 'S.S.105077 W.J. BOOTS STO. I. R.N.' Ribbon missing.
William John Boots joined the Royal Navy on 21 May 1907 and was rated as a Stoker 1st Class. Between 1912 to 1914 he was transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve. During World War I, he served in HMS 'Caesar' on the North America and West Indies Station. He was demobilised on 3 June 1921. In the '1939 England and Wales Register' he is shown still living in East Ham and employed as a lime mixer. He married Edith Maud Waite on 22 June 1920. He was the brother of George Henry Boots.
