Marconi Room on the 'Highland Piper' (1911)
Interior of the passenger/cargo liner 'Highland Piper' (1911) showing the Marconi Room with equipment supplied by the United Wireless Telegraph Co.
In this period the Nelson Line maintained a weekly passenger and cargo service to the River Plate from London (also a fortnightly service from Liverpool). The voyage took three weeks and there were always seven or eight Nelson Line vessels at sea. Wireless telegraph messages transmitted between the ships enabled passengers to be in full communication with the shore. Shipping advertisements made regular mention of this facility.
