Proposed design of the First Class Café Parisien on the 'Olympic' (1911)
Interior of the passenger liner 'Olympic' (1911) showing a photograph of an original drawing mounted on card. The title is written below in pen: 'S S "OLYMPIC" PROPOSED DESIGN OF CAFÉ PARISIEN'. A label on the negative has the size of the original drawing: 24.75 x 17.25 inches. Bedford Lemere & Co daybooks state that this photograph was taken for the design company Aldam Heaton & Co on 30 October 1912.
The First Class Café Parisien was on the starboard side of the Bridge Deck (B Deck); it was decorated with trellis work. Sliding doors connected it to the First Class Restaurant. Both the Café and Restaurant offered passengers an à la carte menu, while the service in the Dining Saloon was table d'hôte.
This photograph was taken during the month in which the 'Olympic' was taken out of service by the White Star Line for an extensive programme of reconstruction. New provisions for safety had to be made following the enquiry into the loss of her sistership 'Titanic'. The six month period during which the 'Olympic' was back at her shipbuilders was also an opportunity to make improvements to the passenger facilities. The construction of the First Class Café Parisien was one of these projects.
