Beaches and Harbour, Normandy 1944

Freedman worked as a signwriter and a stonemason's and architect's assistant before studying art. Between 1930 and 1940 he was instructor in still life at the Royal College of art and, from 1940-46, he served as an official war artist while a captain in the Royal Marines. Although a figurative artist he is best known for his revival of colour lithography and book illustration.

This is a working drawing for a large oil painting of the Mulberry artificial harbour at Arromanches, Normandy, now in the Imperial War Museum.
