Shipping Mines, December 1940
This drawing shows activity on the Railway Pier at Kyle of Lochalsh with the Kyleakin hills on Skye in the background across Loch Alsh. In the foreground, mines are being transferred from wagons to barges. The wagons brought the mines from the storage area at Duirinish to the pier. The barges then took the mines out to minelayers (converted merchant vessels) anchored out on the loch. The drawing is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left. Scottish draughtsman, painter and printmaker Muirhead Bone was the first individual to be appointed a War Artist in the First World War. He was also an official War Artist in the Second World War.
