Messina Earthquake Medal

Awarded to Ernest Jorden, born, 1887, Chief Yeoman of Signals, HMS 'Duncan.' Obverse: Head of King Victor Emmanuel III (left). Legend: 'VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA'. Reverse: Inscription within an oak wreath tied with a bow: 'MEDAGLIA COMMEMORATIVA TERREMOTO CALABRO-SICULO 28 DICEMBRE 1908'.

A commemorative medal awarded to those who came to the aid of victims of the earthquake which struck Sicily and Calabria on 28 December 1908.

Ernest Jordon (1887-1958) was born in North Kensington, London where his mother Sophia, widow of Thomas James, kept a coffee house. He entered the Royal Navy on 26 April 1905 and was serving in HMS 'Duncan' during the Messina earthquake of 1908. He was in 'Inflexible' and 'Lord Nelson' during the Dardanelles campaign, and wrote to his sister Daisy about his experiences. Jordan was rated Yeoman of Signals in 1916. After the end of the war, he married Laura Hillier in London on 5th July 1919. He remained in the Royal Navy throughout the Second World War, and was resident in Felixstowe at the time of his death in 1858.
